On September 21st, Health Sciences North (HSN) Foundation was invited to HSN’s Cardiology Department to view one of their equipment purchases. Recently, Health Sciences North’s Cardiac Department received 6 new temporary pacemakers thanks to the support of Health Sciences North Foundation.
“We are very grateful to HSN Foundation for the purchase of 6 brand new Medtronic temporary pacemakers for the Medicine Program,” said Joanne Collin, Administrative Director, Medicine, HSN. “Temporary pacemakers are used in the emergency treatment of patients who are unstable with a very low heart rate in many different situations. They have a significant impact on patient comfort, care and outcomes for our patients and for those patients being referred within our North East Local Health Integration Network (NELHIN).”
The temporary pacemakers are used in crisis situations to stimulate the heartbeat and are worn outside the body, causing no pain or discomfort to the patient. They are used by the patient until their heart rate returns to normal or a permanent device is inserted. This equipment is also used post operatively on all cardiac patients for 24-48 hours. As the cardiac referral centre for Northeast Ontario, it is critical that HSN is equipped with the pacemakers to treat patients from across the region.
“Health Sciences North Foundation is proud to support HSN’s Medicine Program with the purchase of 6 new temporary pacemakers,” said Mary Lou Hussak, President and CEO, HSN Foundation. “HSN Foundation strives to support the hospital with the most advanced equipment to ensure patients have the best possible outcomes close to home. It is because of the generosity of our donors that we are able to fund priority purchases at HSN.”
